Volunteers are essential for trail maintenance

Maintenance of Friends’ properties is done almost entirely by volunteers. One exception was last spring when we hired a bull dozer to level two acres of land we received in an exchange from a neighbor. Then volunteers sowed grass on the leveled soil. Last summer was a favorable season so the grass is growing well.

Friends did not build any fences in 2007. However, a couple neighbors have requested them and we have nearly finished clearing the fence rows. We also put temporary decks on two bridges near County Roads 33 and 42.

Nine volunteers showed up on April 28 for a work party to widen the trail in Middlebury. Everyone put in a strong effort but there is still enough work remaining for another work day next spring. Later we cleaned up another section of the trail in Middlebury in preparation for the trail walk held on National Trails Day, June 2.

Friends wish to thank the following volunteers for their help:

Buddy Dyck      Jeff Kessler      Linda Baxley       Elvie Bontrager

Randy Stouder   Bob Mayerick     Tiaan de Beer      Danny Graber

Friends try to be good stewards of their property by keeping it trim and looking good. The following volunteers donated their time and equipment to mow the Pumpkinvine corridor last summer:

Clarence Yoder   Mike Baxley      Quinn Holdeman    Dana SniderQuinn-mowing

Dale Eash      Rick Miller        Beth Snider

Friends created the position, Trail Maintenance Volunteer, who will look after specified one or two mile sections. If you are interested in becoming a Trail Maintenance Volunteer in 2007 contact Bob Carrico at 266-1362 or rjcarrico1@verizon.net.
