The Friends of the Pumpkinvine Nature Trail, Inc. purchased the abandoned Pumpkinvine railroad corridor from Penn Central Corporation in 1993. The railroad had been abandoned for more than 10 years and some sections of the corridor had grown up in trees and brush while others were occupied by neighbors for cultivation or pasture.
As disagreements over land ownership were settled Friends organized work parties to remove the under growth in several sections of the corridor. In 1996 work party volunteers built a demonstration trail at the south west end of the corridor in Goshen. A 1.75-mile section of corridor was donated to Goshen Parks and Recreation Department and they built a trail that was opened for public use in March, 2000.
Many Friends members volunteered their time, energy and tools to convert the former Pumpkinvine corridor into a rail-trail. This photo gallery below recalls the efforts of the volunteers.
