Bicycle and pedestrian trails to Elkhart, Goshen, Middlebury and Shipshewana will be connected by 26 miles of trails when present development plans are complete. The two sections, totaling 2.25 miles, shown in brown on the map below will be on county roads. This Trail Overview page gives information about both developed (solid lines) and undeveloped (dashed lines) sections of trail. Some sections of trail are scheduled for construction in 2010 and the map below will be updated as the work is completed. You can find information about specific sections of the trails by clicking the The trails are managed by four agencies: Elkhart County Parks and Recreation, Goshen Parks and Recreation, Town of Middlebury and Town of Shipshewana. The trail surface is asphalt except for 1.75 miles from SR 5 to CR 28 northeast of Goshen. Three public parks, Ox Bow Park, Abshire Park and Krider Garden, will also be connected by the trail system. These parks provide parking and restrooms. The trail system passes through urban areas, small towns and agricultural communities. The countryside along the Pumpkinvine Trail includes the third largest Amish community in the U.S. You can download printable road maps to the trails as pdf files from the table on the right. The Elkhart to Shipshewana map shows the entire area and prints on legal size paper. The Elkhart to Middlebury and the Middlebury to Shipshewana maps show the eastern and western portions, respectively, of the area. They can be downloaded as separate pdf files that will print on letter size paper. |
