2012 Pumpkinvine Bike Ride GPS Files

***All Turns Indicated by Your GPS Should be Confirmed by

Road Arrows BEFORE Making the Turn!***

As most GPS-users are aware, each GPS model has its own "quirks". We have posted two sets of files which we believe will satisfy MOST users. If you have issues either with loading the files into your GPS, or with the way the files work on your ride, please let us know, so these issues can be addressed in future years.

All routes are subject to change due to changes in road availability. The final GPS routes will be available 1 week prior to the ride. Sometimes routes change even during that last week (or even on the eve of the big ride … as in 2010 due to a major windstorm). All GPS users should carry printed maps and give top priority to day-of-ride directions. Anytime there is a discrepancy between the hard-copy maps and the road markings vs the GPS routes, the maps and road markings should take priority. Then please let us know after the ride of any such errors.

  • To download the files:
    • RIGHT-click on the file link and save the file to your computer. Then use your own GPS software to upload to your GPS. (GPS Babel is a free download for transferring these files to your GPS: http://www.gpsbabel.org/download.html
    • If you have a GPS with internal maps and want to use “auto-routing”, download the appropriate auto-routing maps.
    • If your GPS unit does not have an “auto-routing” capability (such as the early Garmin Edge units), skip the auto-routing explanation and choose a non-auto-routing file from the second table below.

Green line

Auto-Routers

  • For routes leaving Goshen the GPS file will begin at the point where the route leaves the trail.
  • For routes entering Goshen the GPS file will terminate at the point where the route enters the trail.
  • For routes entering Shipshewana the GPS files terminate at the point where the route enters the trail. As you exit the trail, follow road markings for approximately 1 mile to the Shipshewana SAG.
  • All auto-routing files have been kept under 50 via points. In order to do this, the 100-mile riders will need to use two files, if starting in Goshen, and three files, if starting in Shipshewana. All 60-mile riders will need 2 files.
  • Because of the section of ride using the Pumpkinvine Trail, the 60-mile riders starting in Shipshewana will need two files; one going to Goshen and the other returning. The first file ends when you enter the trail to travel to the Goshen SAG. The second file begins when you leave the trail after visiting the Goshen SAG. This beginning of file 2 is not the same point as the end of file 1, hence the necessity for 2 separate files. If you are riding 60 miles and beginning in Goshen, the first file ends when entering the trail near Shipshewana. The second file begins as you exit the trail near Shipshewana.
  • These routes have NOT been field tested. In computer-testing these routes, they sometimes produced “phantom” turn arrows. These arrows were not accompanied by any turn directions but simply a Via number (“Via Point: 1”, or “Via Point: 23” etc.). PLEASE confirm your turns with road markings before executing the turn!

Non Auto-Routers

  • Because of the number of routes, they have not all been “field-tested”, so please carry a map and confirm all GPS-indicated turns with road arrows.
  • In field testing some of the routes, the only problems occurred within 1 or 2 turns after one of the Middlebury or Shipshewana Sag stops. Depending on the route you may leave these SAGs two or even three times and in different directions. Once you are away from Middlebury or Shipshewana, the GPS should guide you correctly through the route, but in town, pay careful attention to route markings.
  • Each turn is shown with a L or R, followed by the road you are turning onto. The roads are marked either County Road, followed by the road number e.g LCR20, would indicate a left turn onto County Road 20. Or RSR13, would be right onto State Route 13.
